Even though the bitcoin blockchain has never been hacked, a number of exchanges that have crypto wallets have been hacked.  It’s never advisable to leave your coins on an exchange wallet, unless that is the only wallet available.  So, what’s the solution for secure access to your bitcoin and other cryptocurrency coins?  The Trezor T hardware device, which I will cover in this article,  is a great solution.

Cryptos are stored on the blockchain, and access to your coins can be handled in a few ways.  One option is to store your private keys and private seed phrase on a piece of paper and place it in a safe or other secure place.  This is called a paper wallet.

A hot wallet is a cryptocurrency wallet which is or was connected to the internet.  One of the advantages of hot wallets is that they can be used to make small everyday transactions.  However, using one to keep larger amounts of coins is not recommended, as it is vulnerable to attacks.  One of the most common types of hot wallets is software wallets.

A software wallet is a cryptocurrency wallet that stores the seed in an application that runs as a desktop application, in a browser, or on a tablet or smartphone.  Software wallets represent the most common cryptocurrency software among users and are typically free of charge.  From the security point of view, software wallets are hot wallets because they expose the seed to the online environment.

A cold wallet or cold storage is a type of cryptocurrency wallet designed for maximum security.  Unlike hot wallets, cold wallets never exposes the seed or individual private keys to an insecure environment connected to the internet, such as a PC, Mac, or a smartphone.

A private key is a randomly generated secret number that should only be known to the owner of the associated address.  Private keys are contained in a wallet and are mathematically linked to the corresponding public keys.  A private key can be used to spend the funds that are associated with a specific address and should, therefore, be kept private.  Publicly sharing a private key will result in a loss of funds.

The Trezor wallet stores the user's private keys in a secure hardware device.  With a cold or hardware wallet, the private keys never leave the device, ensuring that there is no risk of losing funds even if the device is exposed to a potentially infected computer.

When I started betting on cryptos, it was apparent to me early on, that the offline, cold storage route was the way to go to manage and trade my cryptos.

I took a look and both the Ledger and the Trezor T.  I chose the Trezor for a number of reasons that will be discussed in this article.

I chose the Trezor T model for maximum security, but also because it has a full color touchscreen as opposed to just two button on the Trezor One.

With either wallet your recovery seed is stored offline.  Your entire wallet is always accessible via your personal 12 to 24 words long recovery seed.  When you first set up your Trezor, it will generate the seed for you. When you need to restore access to your wallet, use will use this offline backup seed.  The recovery seed follows a standard created by us at SatoshiLabs, and it is widely used and compatible with many wallet apps.

For additional security, I would suggest storing your recovery seed and private keys on paper in a secure place.  You don’t want to store this seed on your computer.  I don’t even store mine on an external hard drive or memory stick.

Peer reviews – Trezor has been analyzed, reviewed, and endorsed by many trusted third parties.

Highest security standards - The Model T is safeguarded by several layers of protection, starting with the randomly generated recovery seed, the user-created PIN, and the passphrase feature.  These three security layers make the Model T an airtight device.

User-friendly environment - In my opinion, using the Model T is easier than using a smartphone. Controlled through the Trusted Display in combination with the color touchscreen of Model T, you will quickly become familiar with the interface of Trezor.

Open-source architecture - Everything that comprises the Model T, from the hardware to the software, is open-source.  This means that you can verify their work on GitHub, customize it to suit your needs, or partner with the company on future development.  This Trezor provides you with absolute decentralization and control over your assets.

Reputable brand - A positive user experience is the best endorsement, as the reviews and myself testify to.

Innovative company - Created by SatoshiLabs in 2014, the Trezor One was the original hardware wallet and the first of its kind in the world.  It offers great security for cryptocurrencies, password management, and serves as the second factor in Two-Factor Authentication.  These features combine with an interface that is easy to use whether you are a security expert or a brand new user.  The Trezor Model T is the next-generation hardware wallet, designed with the benefits of the original Trezor, combined with a modern and intuitive interface for improved user experience and security.

It features a touchscreen, faster processor, and advanced coin support, as well as all the features of the Trezor One.  SatoshiLabs' dedicated development, design, and cryptography teams are always on the lookout for progressive and unique ways of improving the Trezor T.

Compatible integrations - Due to its open-source environment and easy to customize code, the Model T is an ideal device to be used with different types of third-party apps and integrations.  Independent developers can integrate Trezor into their own solutions.

Community-centered development - The open-source nature of Trezor projects allows everyone from the community to participate in the development of Trezor.  SatoshiLabs is keenly focused on the further development of the Bitcoin ecosystem and education of the public interested in Bitcoin.

A wide range of cryptocurrencies - With over 1,000 supported cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Monero, Litecoin, and Ripple, the Trezor T is ahead of the curve when it comes to accessing your coins.

Free support 7 days a week - I have always found Trezor support to be timely and concise when they answer my questions.  I never feel like they are not listening.  They have a customer satisfaction rating of over 91% as of this writing.

Additional features -  The Model T comes with a batch of handy and easy to use additional features such as In-wallet Exchanges, Password Manager, Two-factor authentication capabilities, and even a direct fiat-to-crypto buy feature. You can buy and exchange cryptocurrencies, manage your digital identities, and keep your passwords accessible and safely stored, all within the Model T’s interface.

Trezor Model T is not just a hardware wallet - Most hardware wallets lack excitement.  The Model T is an interactive hardware wallet, digital identity tool, security token, and much more.  There are even icon covers that allow you to personalize your device.

Some final thoughts about this crypto hardware wallet.

Some final thoughts about this crypto hardware wallet.

So if you're trying to decide if it makes sense to cut corners when it comes to crypto security, to me, it makes more sense to do everything possible to maximize security.  In today's day and age of cyber crime, for me, it was a no-brainer to invest in a Trezor T.  Check them out, and I believe you will come to that same conclusion.  I sleep better knowing I have Trezor T in my corner.  I decided not to order mine from Amazon or any other merchant.  When you order direct from Trezor you get the latest version of their product and no risk of getting a "knockoff".
